The ceremony was produced by Dick Clark Productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Talk-show host Seth Meyers hosted the ceremony for the first time. Oprah Winfrey was announced as Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award honoree on December 13, 2017. The nominees were announced on December 11, 2017, by Sharon Stone, Alfre Woodard, Kristen Bell and Garrett Hedlund. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won the most awards for the evening with four, including Best Motion Picture – Drama. The Shape of Water and Lady Bird won two awards each. Big Little Lies, The Handmaid's Tale, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were among the television shows that received multiple awards.
